Compressing video, in practice

Just say the target — size or destination

The fastest way to use this: tell the chat what you need, like "compress this under 25 MB" or "make it small enough to email". The assistant picks the settings so you don't have to think about bitrate or codecs.

Common targets: under 16 MB for WhatsApp, under 25 MB for most email, and whatever your upload form caps at for everything else.

Sending video on WhatsApp

WhatsApp already compresses videos hard on its own, which is why shared clips often look blocky. Compressing to a sensible size first — rather than letting WhatsApp crush it — usually keeps the video looking noticeably better on the other end. Ask for "compress for WhatsApp" and you get a clip that sends fast and still looks clean.

Resolution does the heavy lifting

A 4K phone video carries far more data than any messaging app or email needs. Dropping it to 1080p (or 720p for messaging) shrinks the file dramatically before any visible quality is lost — often more than tuning compression alone. If you know where it's going, say so: "compress this to 720p for WhatsApp".

How much quality do you lose?

For normal viewing on a phone or laptop, moderate compression is hard to notice — the assistant balances size against quality automatically. Very aggressive size targets start to show blockiness in fast motion and detailed scenes first. Your original file is never modified; you always get a new, smaller copy.

Big files and limits

Video is the one place uploads get large. Guests can compress videos up to the guest file limit; a free account raises it. If a very long or high-resolution video is too big to upload, trim it first (ask to cut the section you need) and compress that.

Common questions about compressing videos.

Drop your video into the chat and ask to compress it. The assistant re-encodes it to a smaller MP4 and gives it back to download.

Yes. You can use it for free as a guest. Signing in raises your limits and lets you do more per day.

No — everything runs in your browser. There's nothing to download or set up.

Your file is only used for the task you asked for. We don't share it or use it for anything else, and it's automatically deleted from our servers within 24 hours.

Drop the video in the chat and say "compress this for WhatsApp". You get a smaller MP4 that sends quickly and looks better than letting WhatsApp compress it for you — WhatsApp's own compression is aggressive.

Ask to compress it under your provider's limit (usually 25 MB). The assistant reduces the size, dropping resolution if needed to hit the target, and gives you a new MP4 to attach.

Not for normal viewing — moderate compression is hard to spot on a phone or laptop screen. Quality only visibly drops at very aggressive size targets, and your original file is always kept.
