What is a HEIC file?

HEIC is Apple's default photo format on iPhone and iPad, storing images at roughly half the size of JPG thanks to the HEVC codec. Outside the Apple ecosystem support is spotty — Windows, Android and most websites still expect JPG or PNG.

What is a JPG file?

JPG (or JPEG, after the Joint Photographic Experts Group that created it) is the most widely used photo format in the world. It compresses photographs into small files that every browser, app and device can open, trading a little quality for a lot of saved space.

Why convert HEIC to JPG?

HEIC photos routinely fail to open on Windows, on Android and in upload forms, which is why almost everyone converts them. JPG produces small files that open literally everywhere, which makes it the safe default for sharing and publishing photos.

Converting HEIC to JPG, in practice

Why your iPhone photos are HEIC

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because it stores the same image in roughly half the space of JPEG. The catch: Windows, older Android devices, many websites and most upload forms still don't accept it — which is why this conversion exists.

Do you lose quality?

Converting HEIC to JPG at high quality preserves the visible image — you won't see a difference in normal viewing. Expect the JPG file to be roughly twice the size of the HEIC, because JPEG is the less efficient format.

As with any lossy-to-lossy conversion, do it once and keep the HEIC original if the photo matters. Repeated re-saving is what degrades images, not a single conversion.

Converting a batch from your camera roll

Drag photos straight from Photos (Mac) or Explorer (Windows) into the chat — up to 3 at a time as a guest, 12 with a free account — and say “convert these to JPG”. Each photo comes back as a separate JPG download.

Make your iPhone shoot JPG instead

If you'd rather never convert again: Settings → Camera → Formats → “Most Compatible” makes the camera save JPEG directly. The trade-off is photos take about twice the storage. Many people keep HEIC for the space savings and convert the occasional photo that needs to be shared — which is exactly what this page is for.

Common errors and gotchas

HEIC vs HEIF: HEIF is the container standard, HEIC is Apple's flavor of it — both convert here. If Windows shows a photo as broken, it isn't corrupted; Windows just needs a paid codec to display HEIC, which is another reason to convert to JPG.

A photo you edited on iPhone and shared via some apps may already have been converted to JPEG in transit — check the extension before converting twice.

Common questions about converting HEIC to JPG.

Drop your HEIC into the chat and ask to convert it to JPG. The assistant runs the conversion and gives you a JPG to download — usually in a second or two.

No. Everything runs in your browser — there's nothing to download or set up. Just drop your HEIC and go.

Your HEIC is only used to run the conversion you asked for. We don't share it or use it for anything else, and it's automatically deleted from our servers within 24 hours.

Windows only supports HEIC after installing a codec from the Microsoft Store (the HEVC one costs about a dollar). Converting the photos to JPG is free and makes them open everywhere, with no visible quality difference.

Not visibly. The conversion re-encodes at high quality, so the image looks identical on screens and in prints. The JPG will be a larger file than the HEIC — that's expected, not a quality gain or loss.

Yes — attach up to 3 photos per message as a guest or 12 with a free account, and ask once. Each comes back as its own JPG.
