What is a M4A file?
M4A is the audio-only MP4 container, usually carrying AAC audio — the format of iTunes purchases and Apple Voice Memos. Quality per megabyte beats MP3, though some older players won't take it.
What is a MP3 file?
MP3 made digital music mainstream and remains the most compatible audio format in existence. Its lossy compression shrinks audio to roughly a tenth of its original size while keeping quality most listeners can't tell apart from the source.
Why convert M4A to MP3?

By default your M4A is converted to MP3 with high-quality variable bitrate encoding (LAME V2, roughly 190 kbps). For music, podcasts and voice recordings that is audibly identical to the source for almost all listeners on almost all speakers.
If a device or platform demands a specific bitrate, just say so in the chat — “convert this M4A to a 320 kbps MP3” — and the assistant encodes to that instead.
Will the audio lose quality?
M4A (AAC) and MP3 are both lossy formats, so this is a lossy-to-lossy conversion: a small amount of information is re-discarded during re-encoding. In practice the difference is inaudible at the bitrates we use, but it is cumulative — converting back and forth repeatedly will eventually degrade the sound.
The practical rule: keep your original M4A files, convert once, and use the MP3 copies for compatibility.
iPhone voice memos and recordings
Apple's Voice Memos app saves recordings as M4A, which is why this is one of the most common conversions people need: many transcription tools, older car stereos, and editing apps still expect MP3.

Common errors and gotchas
MP4A, M4B, MA4? The format is called M4A — searches for “mp4a”, “ma4” or “w4a” all mean the same thing. One real exception: .m4p files are DRM-protected iTunes purchases and cannot legally be converted by any tool; .m4b files are audiobooks and usually convert fine.
If a conversion fails, check that the file actually plays first — a renamed extension doesn't change what's inside, and a download that was cut off will fail in any converter.
